Trail Design Services

Purpose-built trail design that balances flow, sustainability, and user experience — from first sketch to final staking.

The Speedgoat Approach to Trail Design

Great trails don’t happen by accident. At Speedgoat Trail Co, our design process is rooted in decades of riding, building, and studying how trails interact with terrain, ecosystems, and the people who use them. We approach every project as both engineers and enthusiasts — because we believe the best trail designers are the ones who ride every day.

Our approach starts with the land. Before a single line is drawn, we walk the terrain, study topographic maps, assess soil and drainage, and understand the intended user experience. We design trails that feel inevitable — as if the mountain always wanted a trail exactly there.

Whether you’re building a world-class flow trail network, a sustainable hiking system, or a technical enduro course, our design methodology ensures trails that are thrilling to ride, easy to maintain, and built to last for decades.

Ready to Design Your Dream Trail?

From a single trail to a full network — let’s talk about what’s possible on your land.

What Makes Great Trail Design?

The best trails share a common set of qualities — and they don’t happen by accident. Here’s what we design for on every project.

Flow & Momentum

Great trails carry momentum naturally. Through careful grade management, corner geometry, and rhythm section placement, we design trails that reward good technique and feel effortless at speed. Flow isn’t just for bike trails — it applies to any trail where the user experience is paramount.

Sustainability

A trail that erodes, floods, or requires constant repair is a design failure. We engineer every trail with drainage as a first-order concern — grade reversals, outslope, rolling dips, and proper armoring where needed. Sustainable design means trails that improve with age, not deteriorate.

User-Appropriate Challenge

The best trails match their intended audience. A beginner flow trail and an expert enduro course require completely different design vocabularies. We design with a clear user profile in mind — matching technical challenge, exposure, and physical demand to the riders or hikers who will actually use the trail.

Buildability

A beautiful design that’s impossible to build is worthless. Our designs are grounded in real-world construction knowledge — we know what equipment can access, how much hand work is realistic, and how to sequence construction for efficiency. Our construction background makes our designs smarter and more cost-effective.

Trail Design FAQs

Our design process typically begins with a discovery call to understand your goals, budget, and timeline. From there, we conduct a site visit and terrain assessment, followed by a conceptual alignment study. Once a preferred route is identified, we develop detailed design documents including topographic maps, grading plans, drainage design, and construction specifications. We then support you through permitting and are available to provide construction oversight once building begins.

Design timelines vary significantly by project scope. A single trail of 1–3 miles with straightforward permitting might take 2–4 months from kick-off to construction-ready documents. A multi-trail network with complex environmental review and agency coordination can take 12–24 months. We’ll give you a realistic timeline estimate during our initial consultation based on your specific site and regulatory environment.

Yes — we have extensive experience working with the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, state parks, and county open space agencies. We understand the permitting requirements, NEPA/CEQA processes, and agency relationships that make public land projects succeed. We can also help you identify the right agency contacts and navigate the application process.

Absolutely. Private landowner projects are often faster to permit and build than public land projects. We work with ranches, resorts, summer camps, private clubs, and residential developments to create trail systems that enhance property value and provide exceptional recreational experiences. We’ll help you understand any local permitting requirements that may apply.

To get started, it’s helpful to have: a general description of the property and intended trail use; any existing maps, surveys, or GIS data; a sense of your budget and timeline; and information about land ownership and any existing permits or easements. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything — we can help you gather what’s needed as part of our initial site assessment.

We offer both. Many clients engage us for design only and use their own construction crew or a local contractor to build. Others hire us for full design-build, where we handle everything from concept through construction completion. We can also provide construction oversight and quality control if you’re using a third-party builder. Whatever arrangement works best for your project and budget, we can accommodate it.
